Service 179 is one of two SBS Transit routes serving within Nanyang Technological University (NTU), providing bus connections to and from Pioneer MRT and Boon Lay Town Centre. The route also serves residents of Jurong West Street 63 and Pioneer North.
The route experiences exceedingly high demand from students and staff of NTU commuting between Boon Lay/Pioneer MRT stations and the University, and has among the tightest overall frequencies of any bus route in Singapore. The free NTU Campus Rider (currently contracted to Tong Tar Transport Service) also connects between the University and Pioneer MRT, however its limited capacity has little effect of 179’s demand.
- Pioneer Rd North (Blk 840) → Boon Lay
Daily: 0515hrs onwards
- 179A: Boon Lay Int ↺ NTU
Weekdays (except PHs), 0730 – 0930
- 179A: Nanyang Dr (Hall 1) → Boon Lay Int
Weekdays (except PHs), 1600 – 1930
Service 179A helps relieve demand between NTU and Boon Lay and skips bus stops along Jurong West Street 63 and Pioneer Road North in both directions. It was introduced as a faster means of travel for students heading to Boon Lay since many students prefer alighting at Pioneer MRT.
Despite being a Shortworking Trip, it operates more like a route variant, because it plies the entire routing of its parent route, and skips several enroute stops of the parent route. It does not operate during NTU vacations.
