Route History

Service 189 is a inter-town route serving between Bukit Batok and looping at Clementi, via Bukit Batok Neighbourhood 2, Bukit Batok Street 23, Clementi Avenue 6, Clementi MRT and Clementi Avenue 1.

The route is well patronized between the industrial areas around Bukit Batok Street 23 and Bukit Batok MRT, with Shortworking trip 189A performing supplementary trips during Weekdays AM Peak, and scheduled mid-route departures (“downroutes”) in the reverse direction during Weekdays PM Peak. The sector between Clementi MRT and Clementi Ave 1 receives moderate demand due to the area’s presently limited residential developments, but encounters high demand from students heading to the educational institutions along Clementi Avenue 1.

Formerly a Singapore Bus Service (SBS) route since the 1970s, the route was transferred to Trans-Island Bus Service (TIBS) in 2000 and has been operated by SMRT ever since. High capacity articulated buses are deployed during weekday peak hours, and double-deck buses were deployed since 26 October 2015.

In 2014, Service 189 was involved in a small scale bus loading trial where buses were equipped with electronic displays beside the front door, which indicates when the next bus will arrive and the passenger loading onboard that bus.

The new sector along Clementi Avenue 1 will serve NUS High School, Nan Hua High School and nearby residential apartments with connections to Clementi Town Centre. Two new bus stops will be built along the road, which was previously not served by any public bus service.

Last bus departing Bukit Batok Interchange was also extended to 11:15pm daily.

From 2320 daily, buses will be renamed as 189A and terminate at Bukit Batok Street 23, Opp Midview Building.

    • I agree with that, and I have also observed large numbers of passengers transferring between 189 and 201 at Clementi MRT. LTA probably wanted to introduce additional bus connections between Clementi MRT and Avenue 1 / Teban Gardens, but couldn’t go about creating a service from Kent Ridge via Clementi Avenue 1 due to the current road alignment, hence the amendment to 189 instead (and the new Service 201 to cover its deleted sectors).

Do note that LTA has taken the role of central bus planner and PTOs SBST & SMRT have little say in route amendments of any sort.

  1. 189 shouldn’t have double deck. saw it today on ave 6 and got nobody on upper deck but lower deck full. the peak part is st 23 and is very near to int shd hv long bus instead and then non peak period can transfer to another bus with higher demand

  2. Most of the people taking from Clementi Station onwards heading to Clementi Ave 1 are students.
The fare is capped at $0.61 for students. Thus, they might have taken feeder service + MRT + 189, thus the 189 ride is free.
The authorities should consider this problem, as service 189 might be loosing money.
Then again, they can revert 189 back to its original route, and replace it with a trunk service which serves areas that are in high demand.

    • Agree. 189 should be reverted, while 201 should be rerouted. A new bus service should be implemented to serve residents of Clementi Ave 1, possibly looping there like 189. But 189 is not losing money as you see the huge crowds during the morning peak hours going to the industrial area.
