Service 972 provides residents of Bukit Panjang with greater connectivity to Orchard and Dhoby Ghaut. By running parallel to existing bus and rail lines, the service provides a travel alternative for commuters who relied on other bus services/the rail network to and from the city. The route incorporates an express sector between Bukit Panjang Road and Whitley Road via the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE) and the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE). This is the fifteenth bus service to be introduced under the Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP).
This route provides more options for commuters using existing bus routes between Bukit Panjang and the City. Previously, commuters relied on Service 190 and Service 700/A for such connections, which were beyond the reach of convenience and often had to transfer from the LRT or Feeders 920 or 922. The rail network was not a popular choice due to the extended travel time and transfers needed between LRT and MRT lines. The only direct bus route route, Express 971E, operates unidirectionally during weekday peak hours only. As a result, the need arises for a direct full-day connection between the northern parts of Bukit Panjang (Neighborhoods 4, 5 and 6) and the City.
Service 972 fulfills that link by offering a full-day service between the northern part of Bukit Panjang and the City, duplicating the Bukit Panjang sector of Express 971E. It also relieves demand from Services 190 and 700/A, as well as improving connectivity to Bukit Panjang Road, calling at the pair of bus stops outside Blk 270 Bukit Panjang Road, a major transfer stops for many services plying along the BKE. In anticipation for potentially high demand, this service may use non-BSEP bendy buses.
Boarding and alighting is not allowed at Bukit Panjang Temporary Bus Park. As a result, the first passenger stop of the route is opposite Blk 183 Bukit Panjang Road (originally Blk 604, shifted on 27 Dec 2015), whereas the last passenger stop is at Blk 183 Bukit Panjang Road.
After 2300hrs daily, buses leaving Bukit Panjang Temporary Bus Park will be renumbered as 972A and terminate at Orchard Road (Dhoby Ghaut Stn).
The service debuted on Sunday, 17/11/2013, where a soft launch was carried out at Greenridge Shopping Center at 8:30am, hosted together with a community brisk walk. SMB3088M was the first bus deployed, departing Bukit Panjang at 6am. The service utilized a full fleet of MAN A22 buses.
SMRT Enviro500 MMC Launch:
SMRT’s Alexander Dennis Enviro500 MMC made their debut on revenue service on Sunday, 13 Jul 2014 on Service 972. Three units, namely SMB3501L (972TQ01) , SMB3502J (972AP07) and SMB3503G (972TQ02) were put on service. SMB3502J was withdrawn in the morning following an electrical fault leading to bus breakdown, but returned in the afternoon.
SMB3502J is the first Enviro500 MMC in revenue service, departing Bukit Panjng Temporary Bus Park at around 7:00am in the morning.
2015 Route Amendment
To enhance connectivity for Bukit Panjang residents, Service 972 was amended to serve Senja Road from 14 June 2015.
The new route skips a pair of bus stops along Bt Panjang Ring Rd (Blk 617 and Blk 537A CP) while calling at 4 pairs of existing bus stops along Senja Road previously only served by Feeder service 920.
