Route History

Service 980 is an inter-town trunk route linking housing estates around Sembawang and Yishun, and the suburban areas of Upper Thomson and Thomson, providing connections to the City areas of Novena, Rochor Canal, Middle Road and Beach Road. Along with Service 167, it serves the full stretch of Upper Thomson Road and connects to the city, and compliments Service 166 between Upper Thomson and Rochor Canal.

Demand for this route remains moderate to low throughout the day owing to the presence of duplicate routes and low-density developments along much of its route. As such, the route plays a largely supplementary role and operates at low frequencies throughout the day.

Formerly a Singapore Bus Service (SBS) route since the 1970s (then known as Service 160), the route was transferred to Trans-Island Bus Service (TIBS) in 1983, renumbered Service 980 in 1998 and has been operated by SMRT ever since. High capacity articulated / double-deck buses are not deployed due to insufficient demand.

Fare: Charges fares for regular trunk services. See Bus Fares for exact fares.

Fleet: Service 980′s fleet comprises Mercedes-Benz OC500LE and MAN NL323F buses.

  1. I am catching the first 980 from bus stop 58029 to work. Can’t miss it or else late to work.
The bus drive saw me waving, i am sure we’ve got eye contact. But he did not intend to stop at all.
Please, the first of the day is important to many of us. How can never pay attention to passengers! In the other way, I felt lucky that I did not board on the bus, because drive is not in a safety mood!

  2. I am waiting for bus 980 today at bus stop outside Novena Square around 6.30pm. I waited more than 30 mins. The bus still not arrived yet. To my frustration, I saw a taxi just turn in Novena Square, I do not want to miss it and head to the taxi. Why a day buses take so long to arrive at the bus stop. Time is precious, can’t waste time just like this. Thought Singapore bus services has improved?? MRT always breaks down, bus services also not improve, how to get things done on time? Transport to working people is an damn important life tools, this service should look improvement too. Over so many years, I can’t imagine our technology not improved and I still got to wait 30mins like 30 yrs ago!!
