Route History

Express Service 850E provides residents of Yishun with greater connectivity to Dhoby Ghaut and Shenton Way. By running parallel to the existing North-South Line (NSL), the service provides a travel alternative for commuters who relied on the rail network and existing feeder buses to and from work in the Central areas. The route incorporates a long express sector between Yishun Ring Road (near Khatib MRT) and Dhoby Ghaut via Lentor Avenue, Seletar Expressway (SLE) and Central Expressway (CTE), significantly improving journey time for commuters.

This route is the sixth bus service to be introduced under the Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP), which provides more options for commuters using stretches of the existing rail lines that experience persistently high ridership, while ongoing rail enhancement measures are being implemented. As such, buses operating on this route are funded under the BSEP.

Operating during weekday peak hours only, Service 850E encounters very high demand on a daily basis, with buses often encountering full loading. Morning departures were gradually increased from 2 to 6, while Alexander Dennis Enviro500 double-deck buses were introduced in August 2014

Apart from Express 850E, Premium 559 offers more direct service to Shenton Way (without passing through Dhoby Ghaut), but charges higher Premium fares, as compared to distance-based express fares. Alternatively, trunk Service 857 plies from Yishun to Bras Basah via Little India, but the hassle of transferring buses and longer journey time may not appeal to many commuters.

“A new express service – Service 850E – that connects Yishun to the Central Business District (CBD) will begin operations from Monday, 18 February 2013. This is the sixth bus service to be rolled out under the Land Transport Authority’s (LTA) Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP). The new service will provide greater connectivity for Yishun residents travelling to and from areas in the CBD during weekday morning and evening peak-hours (excluding public holidays).”

2015 Route Amendment

To reduce the duplicated sectors due to the launch of City Direct Service 663, Service 850E was amended to start from Yishun St 41, plying Yishun Ave 1 and Yishun Ave 11 before continuing on its original route on Yishun Ring Rd to CBD. Commuters who used to board Service 850E at Yishun Ave 6, Yishun St 31 and first 3 stops of Yishun Ring Rd should switch to City Direct 663 from the day of the route amendment, which duplicates Service 850E’s CBD Sectors.

Fare: Charges distance-based express fares. See Bus Fares for exact fares.

Fleet: Service 850E′s fleet comprises of Alexander Dennis Enviro500 and MAN NL323F buses under the BSEP scheme.

  1. Please advise is there an additional bus for the evening schedule as I have just saw one pass by synergy hub bus stop around 640pm

    Thanks and regards

  2. Hi i would like to feedback on 850E bus servives.the bus was almost full when reaching block 419 in the morning.please increase more frequency of bus services or provide bigger bus that can cater more peoples. There is no seat at all when i board at opposite block 367 which is at 4th bus stop.People have to stand at least 45-50minutes to reach their working place. Please look on this matter as soon as possible as there are a lots of new bto project ready in yishun area.

  3. Hi, just some feedback. Last few weeks since ending August I have been enjoying the ride in the double decker bus because there are more seats. But since this week Monday, the double decker buses are nowhere to be seen anymore, I would love to see the double decker buses back again or at least long stretch buses because there are more people taking this bus and the usual short buses have not enough space to cater the increasing number of passengers.

  4. Hi, Please note that for evening buses, SMRT are no longer using buses SMB 30XX. Instead, since the month of Sept 2015, they are using old Benny buses, which are very noisy and bumpy. Those 30xx buses purchased for the BSEP are nowhere to be seen in the evening. Please do look into this matter.

    • Hi LM Yip,
Bendy buses have a higher capacity than the MAN A22 buses (SMB30XX). Moreover, some BSEP buses have already been withdrawn from service in preparation for the handover to Tower Transit.

  5. Hi LM Yip,
I am a resident in Yishun but my school is at Siglap, Marine Parade. The shortest way is 858 (SMRT) to Changi A’port, then 36 (SBST)to School. Nomrally in the mornings before the June Holidays I used to take SMB 13XX buses, However, after the June holidays, I began to spot more SMB 30XX buses, Now, I see were they have come from.
