The Enviro500 is a low-floor, three-axle double-decker transit bus built by Alexander Dennis, and part of the Enviro series of buses. First produced in 2002, they are hugely successful in the Hong Kong market, with other units operating in Europe, North America and Australia.

SMRT Buses is the sole operator of the Enviro500 in Singapore, with an initial order of 201 third-generation buses in 2014. These buses are referred to as Enviro500 New Generation, or E500 MMC (for Major Model Change).

With the gradual implementation of the Government Contracting Model (GCM), Enviro500 buses owned by the Government will also be operated by Tower Transit, who was awarded the Bulim Bus Package.

Background:

The Enviro500 is part of the Enviro series of Dennis low-floor buses which was launched in 2002. Click here for the full bus model history.

In 2012, Alexander Dennis revealed the third-generation Enviro500 aimed at the Hong Kong market. Named the Enviro500 MMC (for Major Model Change), it boasts a new exterior styling adapted from the Enviro400, along with an all-new interior. The new chassis features improved maintainability, reliability and reduced operating costs. New design features included offsetting the longitudinally-mounted engine and gearbox, along with a safer straight staircase and fuel tank underneath the stairs, a design feature adapted from the Enviro400. The chassis was was offered in 11.3m, 12.0m and 12.8m lengths. A rear-axle steering system is also made available, supplied by ZF (Servocom® RAS).

The Enviro500 MMC is also known as the Enviro500NG (for New Generation), Trident E500 Turbo, or simply E50D (with ‘D’ indicating diesel) or E50H (with ‘H’ for hybrid). The Hybrid variant was made available in 2013, incorporating a series hybrid drive-train by BAE Systems (HybriDrive series-E), achieving the Euro VI emission standard.

Alternate article: SMRT’s New Double-Deck Buses

SMRT Dennis Enviro500 MMC (SMB5002Y)

In April 2014, SMRT announced the purchase of 201 new Alexander Dennis Enviro500 MMC 12-metre buses, as part of a fleet renewal and expansion initiative by SMRT Buses. These would be SMRT’s first ever batch of double-decker buses. Deliveries began in late May 2014 and are expected to continue until 2015.

The first prototype bus will be produced by Alexander Dennis in Scotland, whereas the remaining 200 units will be assembled in Zhuhai, China, and shipped to Singapore completely built up (CBU). The deal is said to be worth around £50 million.

A projected 98 units will be registered under the Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP), while the remaining 103 will be non-BSEP buses. SMRT is also rumored to have placed options on another batch of Enviro500 MMCs (not confirmed).

Registration:

SMRT will use the 5000 series of vehicle registration numbers for non-BSEP Enviro500s starting from SMB5001A in numerical order. SMB5002Y is the first Enviro500 to be registered, on 19th June 2014, followed by SMB5001A on 25th June 2014.

The BSEP Batch of Enviro500s will bear vehicle registration numbers from 3500 onwards. SMB3501L to SMB3503G were registered on 1st July 2014.

Currently, the Enviro500 chassis is produced in both Guildford in England, and Pasir Gudang in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. Since 2013, Sime Darby TMA Sdn. Bhd has been supplying Alexander Dennis with chassis for the Enviro500, manufactured in Pasir Gudang near Johor Bahru. SMRT’s chassis are currently manufactured in Pasir Gudang and shipped to Zhuhai for assembly.

Due to the complexity of the SMRT livery, buses from Zhuhai (with the exception of the first few units) were delivered solely with the silver base coat. The additional red, black and yellow decals will be fixed in Singapore by SMRT Buses and/or other companies as tendered out by SMRT. The complexity of the livery (given the ‘pixel’ design) added to the complexity of the painting process.

Prototype Unit:

The UK-built prototype bus has been determined to be SMB5001A, with its chassis produced in Guildford and assembled by Alexander Dennis in Scotland. SMB5002Y, the first SMRT Enviro500 from the Zhuhai bus assembly plant, is built on a UK-manufactured chassis and is likely a bodywork prototype unit. The 11th digit of the VIN identifies SMB5001A and SMB5002Y as “G” for Guildford, while other production batch units feature “M” for Malaysia.

Production Batch:

Of the 200 Production batch buses, a projected 98 units will be under the Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP), and the remaining 103 will be non-BSEP buses. Deliveries are expected until 2015.

All Production batch buses are assembled in Zhuhai City (Guangdong Province, China) by Zhuhai Granton Bus And Coach Co., Ltd. (珠海市廣通汽車有限公司) [Link]. The company has been assembling Dennis buses for Kowloon Motor Bus since 2005, and has officially been in partnership with Alexander Dennis Ltd since 2011, supplying the region with Dennis buses. All Enviro500 MMCs for the Hong Kong market (excluding a small handful of UK-built units) are assembled by Zhuhai Granton.

Pre-Debut: [News Release]

On Sunday, 6 July 2014, a preview event was organized for Bukit Panjang grassroots leaders to familiarise themselves with the Double Deckers in the lead-up to the launch. The event was graced by Bukit Panjang Adviser Dr. Teo Ho Pin who, along with about 80 grassroots members, embarked on a Double Decker tour around the Bukit Panjang estate.

Besides giving a brief orientation of the Double Decker, which sports wheelchair friendly features, safety mechanisms and greater capacity, grassroots leaders also got an overview of the initiatives SMRT has undertaken to enhance service standards.

SMRT Enviro500 MMC Launch:

SMRT’s Alexander Dennis Enviro500 MMC made their debut on revenue service on Sunday, 13 Jul 2014 on Service 972. Three units, namely SMB3501L (972TQ01) , SMB3502J (972AP07) and SMB3503G (972TQ02) were put on service. SMB3502J is the first Enviro500 MMC in revenue service, departing Bukit Panjng Temporary Bus Park at around 7:00am.

SMRT Dennis Enviro500 MMC (SMB3502J) – First revenue service trip on Service 972.

SMB3502J was withdrawn in the morning while on its second trip on 972, following a parking brake fault. With the brakes engaged, the bus was driven to Whitley Road (Aft Tanglin CC) where passengers were alighted. The brakes were released manually by ADL maintenance crew and the bus was driven back to the depot.

The bus returned to Service 972 in the late afternoon.

Enviro500s were progressively deployed to services 106, 190, 850E, 966 and 969 a month later, on 18 August 2014. Services 106, 190 and 966 received three buses each on existing BSEP bus slots, while 969 received just one bus. The first two morning trips of Express 850E were converted to double-deck buses, and these two buses would perform Service 969 in the evening, making three double-deck buses on 969 in the evenings.

A third batch of services (188700951E963) received Enviro500s from 15 September 2014.

History:

The Enviro500 is part of the Enviro series of Dennis low-floor buses which was launched in 2002. The original Enviro500 was produced by Dennis (then known as TransBus International) with a modified from a Dennis Trident 3 (hence the original name Trident E500).

In late 2003, a face-lifted version was offered; the second-generation Enviro500 (or Enviro500 MkII), featuring both modified chassis and bodywork. The Enviro bodywork was also compatible with the Volvo B9TL chassis, and Kowloon Motor Bus of Hong Kong acquired over 80 such vehicles. From May 2004, when Transbus International was reorganized into Alexander Dennis Limited, or ADL (while absorbing Walter Alexander Coachbuilders and Dennis Specialist Vehicles), future Enviro500s would be marketed under ADL.

Originally offered with the Euro III Cummins ISMe335 (also from the Trident 3), the more environmentally-friendly Cummins ISLe340 option was available in Euro IV and Euro V ratings, relying on Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology to reduce emissions. Voith or ZF transmissions with SensoTop or TopoDyn fuel saving features are offered for the Euro V rating. A hybrid electric version (Enviro500H) is also offered, using GM-Allison’s parallel hybrid drive system.

  1. I have no idea about it, maybe you should go and ask SMRT why they don’t want to introduced double deckers in the past.

    • When they wanted to start maybe they wanted competite with SBS DDs which were high capcity. But now the road conditions are different and there are more cars. So DDs are even better now. They are studying the roads and accordingly trying to replace trunk route articulated bus with DDs

  2. Bus is ok. The creaks are horrible when the road is rough or bumps and the engine sound sounds like Volvo B10TL. The legroom is ok and staircase is well designed and is safer. But it is a fact that no one can deny that SBS buses are better maintained. In addition the pickup speed is somewhat same as SBS DDs.

  3. What if Alexander Dennis Enviro500 wants to serve on Feeders/Intra-towns? Alexander Dennis Enviro500 should changed to Adjustable Air Conditioning Vents and Doors are Closing by SMRT? This should be enough for further purchases.

    • SMRT might never want to do that. All depends on LTA right now. See how SBS feeders and Townlink services are being operated using DDs.

      • That should be easy: definitely will served on Intra-towns only instead of giving feeders. Intra-town services are two loops.

  4. The SMRT Alexander Dennis Enviro E500MMC BSEP with be continuing above SMB3600J onwards with newest SMRT full red logo when it registers. Now, the rest will be registering SMB3597K, SMB3598H & SMB3599E of.
