Route History

Service 983 provides residents of Choa Chu Kang Neighborhoods 2 and 4 with greater connectivity to transport nodes at Choa Chu Kang and Bukit Panjang, namely the MRT/LRT stations and bus interchanges at both ends. It also serves various schools and other amenities in the neighborhood, such as Lot 1 Shoppers’ Mall, Bethany Methodist Nursing Home, Concord Primary School and Bukit Panjang Govt High School, APSN (Delta Senior Sch) and Bukit Panjang Plaza.

Initially introduced on 25 Apr 2015 as the fortieth (40th) service under the Bus Service Enhancement Programme (BSEP), it was a short trunk service serving Choa Chu Kang Ave 4 and 5 and looping at Keat Hong Close. From 27 Dec 2015, to compliment the opening of the Downtown Line Stage 2, Service 983 was extended to loop at Bukit Panjang, via Choa Chu Kang Ave 6/1/7, CCK Grove, CCK Way, CCK Rd, Upp Bt Timah Rd, Petir Rd and Jelebu Rd.

The current Service 983 benefits residents of newly-built residential developments in the area, namely the HDB Bulit-to-Order (BTO) developments of Sunshine Gardens, Keat Hong Crest, Keat Hong Pride, Keat Hong Axis and Keat Hong Colors.

Route extension to Bukit Panjang

From 27 December 2015, Service 983 was extended to loop at Bukit Panjang, via Choa Chu Kang Ave 6/1/7, CCK Grove, CCK Way, CCK Rd, Upp Bt Timah Rd, Petir Rd and Jelebu Rd.

The route amendment brought improved connectivity to new housing estates at Choa Chu Kang by connecting them to the transport node of Bukit Panjang, with additional bus and rail connections available as part of the DTL2 Bukit Panjang Service Enhancements.

The route extension is the fifty-fourth (54th) route amendment / new route under BSEP.

Past Routings:

Postponed service launch and Familiarzation Ride

Originally intended to be launched on 15 Feb 2015 as the thirty-eighth (38th) BSEP-introduced bus service, negative feedback from Choa Chu Kang residents led to the postponing of the launch along with the accompanying Service 301 introduction and Service 300 amendment to 25 Apr 2015. The route was not amended, but a pair of bus stops along Keat Hong Close had been removed as new housing developments in the area are still under construction, and the route will potentially no longer serve Keat Hong Close once the service is extended to Bukit Panjang.

SMRT organized a free familiarization ride for the new Service 983 on Sunday, 19th April 2015, a weekend before the launch date. Three trips were operated, departing Choa Chu Kang Interchange (Berth 5) at 2:00pm, 3:00pm and 4:00pm. The trip plied the full route of Service 983 without making any enroute stops.

  1. Hopefully it will loop at Segar Road by Fajar Road on 983 by Bukit Timah Road, Jelapang Road, Saujana Road. Better given an extension in December 2015.

  2. We welcome trunk bus service 979 but after afew trips, I used to take mrt to bt batok station and take bus svc 61 & 77 to beauty world bus stop normally takes abt 30- 40 mins to reach. The 1st time I took 979 svc is when they 1st trial launch which I find is very convenient and the journey time is quite fast but after afew trips later, I noticed that the duration and waiting time is getting slower and longer even there’s once 4 bus svc 302 passes by and still no sight of bus svc 979…and also when boarded the bus, most of the time the drivers tends to drive very slowly throughout the whole journey route, seems like they r taking their own sweet time, even when there r no passenger wave for the bus, they will also stop at the bus stop for a while. There’s afew times i board the bus frm Yewtee Blk 619 and they took abt 12-14 mins to reach Yewtee mrt station whereby they can reach the station by 5 mins with a reasonable driving speed and furthermore the delay is not due to passenger load! And by the time they reach Bt Panjang DL station, the travelling time alone already taken abt 20-27 mins whereby it can be reach by 15 mins.
If that’s the case in long run, we would rather take mrt to
Bt batok to take bus go to beauty world is even faster even though I got to walk.
We hoped that u will look into this matter seriously to improve the bus svc time duration becos if this carries on, can be very frustrating sitting in the bus especially when u r running out of time!
Looking forward to see adjustment and improvement on the 979 svc. Thank u

    • Hi Jeffrey,

The scheduled runtime for Service 979 is about 78mins which is definitely way more than what is achievable. This is a known scheduling problem on SMRT/LTA’s side and drivers have to oblige to the very loose bus schedule. You may feedback to both SMRT and LTA to reduce the runtime for Service 979.

  3. Many people have obtained keys to BTO flats at Keat Hong Axis and Keat Hong Colours and have moved in.
When will bus stops at Blk 810 and opposite start operation?

  4. After the 983 extension, all the busses tend to drive very slowly. If possible, may I know the runtime for service 983. Thanks.

  5. After the extension, drivers of Bus service 983 tend to drive very slowly. If possible, may I know the runtime for service 983. Thanks.
